ADVOCATING IN WASHINGTON D.C.

Email Image

Earlier this week, Chairman Wagner took our community's concerns to the Nation's Capitol. Joined by Vice Chairman Andrew Do and our County of Orange Legislative Affairs office, Chairman Wagner met with Senator Alex Padilla, Congresswoman Young Kim, and Congresswoman Michelle Steel to discuss a variety of issues including our Orange County Opioid Prevention Plan to increase opioid prevention, education, and intervention services in local communities across the County and Transitional Age Youth housing to provide at-risk individuals with the services they need to successfully reenter their communities and become self-sufficient.

Chairman Wagner also met with federal departments including the Veterans Affairs' National Cemetery Administration to discuss Orange County's Veterans Cemetery, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to address the airplane noise issues in Orange County. Chairman Wagner made the FAA aware of the 400,000 noise complaints the County has received between 2017 and 2022, and requested if any changes to operations or penalties would be implemented in response to these complaints from our community.

Chairman Wagner will continue to work with our representatives on every level of government to improve the lives of Orange County residents.

MAY RECOGNITIONS

DROWNING PREVENTION MONTH

As we kick off the summer, we also enter the season with the highest number of drowning incidents. Drowning consistently remains the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4 years old both in Orange County and in California. According to the Orange County Fire Authority, there were 111 drowning incidents in Orange County last year; 44 of those were fatalities.

Drowning is preventable and there are actions we can take to minimize drowning risks. At our May 9th Board of Supervisors meeting, we recognized our Orange County Drowning Prevention Coalition including the Jasper Ray Foundation, public health officials, hospitals, public safety personnel, nonprofits, swim schools and parents who are working to prevent drownings by hosting educational events such as the upcoming Water Safety Challenge this Saturday, May 20, 2023. See below for more details on a Water Safety Challenge event near you!

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental Health challenges are one of the most common conditions, affecting one in six Californians. It impacts both the person experiencing the mental health challenge as well as their loved ones.

Throughout the month our Orange County Health Care Agency staff and partners will be promoting mental health awareness activities and we invite you to participate. We also encourage you to visit OCNavigator.org to connect to all the health, wellness and other resources the Coujnty has to offer.

FOSTER CARE MONTH

This month we also recognized all our foster care resource families and our Orange County Social Services Agency staff for their compassion, devotion and commitment to helping improve the lives of Orange County children.

In Orange County, over 2,000 children and youth are in foster care, receiving compassion and care in safe, secure, stable homes with relative caregivers, extended family members, foster families and adoptive families.

Recently, Chairman Wagner visited one of our Senior Social Workers and saw first hand the dedication and commitment of our social workers to ensure the care and well being of our Orange County children and youth.

FIGHTING FENTANYL THREATS CONTINUES

Email Image

We had another strong turnout at our fentanyl forum with over 100 people in attendance in Mission Viejo. In partnership with the City of Mission Viejo, the Orange County Health Care Agency and the Orange County Sheriff's Department, we shared the frightening statistics and the very real impact that this deadly poison is having on our county. Orange County lost 1,358 of our beloved residents to substance use-related deaths. That is almost 4 people per day in Orange county. Fentanyl-related deaths account for the majority of these deaths and the statistics are especially alarming for our youth and young adults. From 2017-2021, there was a 550% increase in fentanyl-related deaths among young adults.

Chairman Wagner will continue to be proactive in this fight against fentanyl threats in Orange County with town halls throughout the district. If you missed the previous town halls on this important topic, we invite you to join us on Tuesday, June 20 at 6:30pm at the Bell Tower Regional Community Center in Rancho Santa Margarita.

TUSTIN TOWN HALL

Thank you to all the residents who joined Chairman Wagner, Mayor Austin Lumbard and Councilman Ryan Gallagher for a great discussion on the issues in Tustin and Orange County. Many of our impactful policies result from collaboration between our office and residents; we appreciate the opportunity to hear from you about what is important to you. We hope to see you at our next town hall!
