April is here, and we are well into Spring!

Late last month, I had the privilege of serving as the Master of Ceremonies for the Orange County Council of Governments' (OCCOG) Annual Conference. I have been OCCOG's Chairman of the Board for the last year, leading Orange County's subregional planning organization, and it's been an honor to serve.

At this week's Board of Supervisors meeting, my colleagues and I passed a vitally important resolution that will allow OC Public Works to abate weeds and combustible vegetation that create a fire hazard. This decision ensures proper measures are taken to mitigate fire dangers that threaten our community's safety.

Also, at this week's Board meeting, we unanimously supported a program that I pushed to save the county money during these difficult economic times: the Orange County Contract Cost Production Program. This program is consistent with cost-saving initiatives the county is seeking, while providing much needed stability for the county for the next fiscal year and the forseeable future.

It's been a productive couple of weeks, and I look forward to what the rest of April has in store!

Supervisor Wagner and Board of Supervisors Adopt Fire Hazard Weed Abatement Program

SANTA ANA, CA – At the April 8 Board meeting, Supervisor Don Wagner and his colleagues on the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the adoption of a resolution authorizing OC Public Works to abate weeds and combustible vegetation that are a public nuisance and a fire hazard.

"Orange County continues taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of our residents," said Supervisor Wagner. "It is incumbent upon us, as the leaders of this county, to ensure the safety and security of our communities. Here in Orange County, we work constantly to prevent anything like the magnitude of destruction we saw recently in Los Angeles County from ever happening. That starts with removing fire-prone vegetation that threatens our community's safety."

This resolution would authorize OC Public Works to use contract services to abate weeds and combustible vegetation on private properties in Orange County's unincorporated areas when property owners have failed to abate weeds and other fire-prone vegetation after being notified.

This program is a vital preventative measure to ensure we have the best fire mitigation practices and that our first responders and Orange County communities are in the best position to prevent a wildfire from starting.

Last week, I joined Jen and Grant on the The Morning Answer to discuss Assemblyman Matt Haney’s AB 564, a bill to prevent the increase in the excise tax on California’s marijuana industry.

We discuss the irony of the bill, and how one of the state’s most hard-line progressives is advocating for tax cuts. Maybe Assemblyman Haney will someday realize that other industries are hurt by his tax and spend policies.

I had the pleasure of being the Master of Ceremonies for Orange County Council of Governments’ Annual Conference, with its theme being: Collaboration is the Catalyst for Community.

OCCOG sits at the nexus of coordinated regional planning, helping to bring our county together on policy issues that go beyond city borders, to help make life better for all our residents. From water and air quality to energy to housing and mobility, OCCOG promotes our county’s collaborative approach to some of the biggest challenges facing us today.

It has been my honor to serve as the Chair of OCCOG this year, and I want to thank my colleagues on the OCCOG Board for their ongoing support and dedication to making sure Orange County’s voice is heard when regional decisions are being made that impact our communities.
