Chairman Don Wagner and Orange County Board of Supervisors Approve Firearm Crime Scene Identification Technology Contract for Sheriff Department’s Crime Lab
(Santa Ana, CA) – Chairman Don Wagner and the Orange County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to upgrade the Orange County Sheriff's Department’s Orange County Crime Lab (OCCL). The Board approved a contract with Leeds Precision Inc., for the purchase and installation of equipment and supportive software for use in providing investigative leads and physical evidence examination for trial in firearms-related crimes.
The EvoFinder System is a single desktop-size unit with software and hardware designed for use in a forensic science laboratory with applications for capturing bullet and cartridge case images in both 2D and 3D, capturing high quality 2D and 3D digital images of the entire surface of bullets and fragments as well as cartridge cases.
"The Orange County Sheriff's Department has always been committed to staying at the forefront of technological advancements to ensure the safety and security of our community,” said Chairman Wagner. “The EvoFinder System represents a leap forward in our capabilities to investigate firearms-related crimes. By investing in state-of-the-art forensic tools, we are reinforcing our commitment to maintaining Orange County as a safe place for residents and visitors alike."
The OCCL provides forensic firearms analysis and will utilize the EvoFinder in cartridge and bullet comparisons in crimes committed in the County of Orange. Criminal firearms related cases submitted to the OCCL range from felons in possession of a firearm to homicides. It will allow examiners to make potential links between shooting scenes and firearms.
Chairman Wagner remains dedicated to supporting the Orange County Sheriff's Department and its Crime Lab in their ongoing efforts to maintain the highest standards of forensic analysis and ensure the safety and well-being of the community.
