Fall is finally upon us, and with the new season comes cooler weather.

With that cooler weather, the Orange County Fire Authority has had much success in containing the Airport Fire. As of the release of this newsletter, the Airport Fire is now at 95% containment.

While we have seen successes, however, damage, loss and heartbreak preceded those successes. People lost homes, possessions, and some suffered grave personal injury. Our firefighters were not immune from tragedy. Sadly, on the evening of Thursday September 19, eight members of an OCFA wildfire handcrew sustained serious injuries in a traffic accident on the 261 freeway last night after returning from battling the Airport Fire.

While four have now been released from the hospital, four others remain in serious condition and in need of our prayers and support.

The Orange County Professional Firefighters Association Local 3631, and the Orange County Fire Authority are working to ensure that these firefighters and their families have the care and resources they need in the long road to recovery.

They are encouraging donations to the Fallen Firefighter Relief Fund, which can greatly assist in these efforts.

Statement from Chairman Don Wagner on OCFA Firefighter Vehicle Rollover

Santa Ana, CA – On the evening of Thursday, October 19, at 6:50pm, a tragic vehicle rollover involving Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) firefighters occurred on the Northbound 241 freeway, just north of Portola, as Crew 1 was concluding its 12-hour shift after battling the Airport Fire. Eight OCFA firefighters sustained injuries in this accident, caused by debris on the freeway.

First responders arrived on the scene promptly at 6:57 PM, including nine paramedic units and twelve ambulances. Three helicopters were also deployed to ensure rapid medical assistance for the injured. Six of the firefighters were transported to local trauma centers, with three taken to Mission Hospital, two to OC Global, and one to UCI, while two others were taken in stable condition to Hoag Irvine.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured firefighters and their families during this incredibly difficult time,” said Chairman Wagner. “We extend our deepest gratitude to these brave men and women for their selfless service and dedication to our community. The risks they take every day to protect us are immeasurable, and we are thankful for their courage.”

“We also want to recognize the swift actions of the rescue workers who responded to the scene,” continued Chairman Wagner. “Their professionalism and rapid response ensured that our firefighters received the care they needed without delay. As Chairman of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, and a member of the OCFA Board of Directors, I assure you that we are here to provide whatever is needed for our firefighters and their loved ones after this tragic accident.”

In light of this traumatic incident, our crews are undergoing a formal critical incident stress debriefing to support their emotional well-being as they process the gravity of this event. The safety and health of our firefighters are of utmost importance, and the County of Orange will continue to provide support to them and their families.

Chairman Wagner will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide any necessary resources to aid in their recovery.

Chairman Don Wagner Allocates Nearly $50,000 to Support City of Orange’s School Crossing Guard Program

Santa Ana, CA – At the September 24th meeting of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, the Board unanimously voted to support Chairman Wagner’s allocation of $47,248 from Third District Discretionary funds to the City of Orange to pay for crossing guards for two Orange Unified School District elementary schools in the Third District.

“I’m happy to have provided the necessary funds to keep the City of Orange’s Crossing Guard Program,” said Chairman Wagner. “This program is vital to ensure the safety of our elementary school students in highly trafficked areas. Closing the funding gap to assist the city for the two schools in the Third District was the right thing to do in light of the city not having the funding to keep this vital safety program for our children going.”

This investment in the safety of our children underscores Chairman Wagner’s commitment to prioritizing the well-being of our community. Chairman Wagner encourages community members to remain vigilant and engaged in supporting initiatives that promote safety and wellness for all residents.

NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION MONTH

NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION MONTH

Email Image

At the September 24th Board of Supervisors Meeting, the Board recognized September as National Suicide Prevention Month.

We join with our community partners, mental health organizations, and individual advocates around the country to promote the message that suicide can be prevented.

According to “The 29th Annual Report on the Conditions of Children in Orange County,” suicide is now the leading cause of death for children aged 10 to 14 years old. Data among Veterans are also quite bleak.

We must make ourselves aware of the signs of suicide ideation and responsibly talk with those who may be thinking of suicide. There are numerous resources available to take care of your loved ones, like the “988” hotline, established in 2005 for suicide prevention, which offers 24/7 invaluable, free, and confidential support to individuals in distress and even provides vital prevention and crisis resources.

We urge everyone in Orange County to join in spreading awareness for suicide prevention and mental health advocacy. You could save a life.

NATIONAL RECOVERY MONTH

NATIONAL RECOVERY MONTH

At the September 24th Board of Supervisors Meeting, the Board recognized September as National Recovery Month.

We dedicate this month to the support of individuals and families living with and impacted by substance use disorders and community and service providers who assist in recovery.

Between 2018-2023, 1 in 4 people aged 12 and older in the United States have used illicit drugs, and more than 1 in 6 suffered from a substance abuse disorder.

National Recovery Month is a time to remind a friend or a loved one suffering from a substance abuse disorder that they are not alone in their journey toward sobriety and that no challenge is too big when you have a community behind you.

I was privlaged to serve as the Master of Ceremonies for the Marian Bergeson Excellence in Public Service Series’ 20th Anniversary Celebration, where I had the opportunity to recognize many outstanding, talented and dedicated women who participated in the series. The Hon. Linda Ackerman received the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Margaret Novak received the Alumna of The Year Award.

The Bergeson Series, founded by former State Senator and County Supervisor Marion Bergeson, exists to identify and train talented young women in public service. Sen. Bergeson, a fearless and dedicated public servant herself, never shied away from mentoring others to work productively in government and throughout their communities. The Bergeson Series continues Sen. Bergeson's unique and valuable legacy. As testimony to her enduring impact on California, former Gov. Pete Wilson joined us at the lunch. Sen. Bergeson served as Gov. Wilson's Secretary of Education.

I look forward to this incredible program's continued success in the years to come, and thank the Marian Bergeson Series for giving me the opportunity to be a part of its celebration, and for all the efforts of its hard working members.

I want to offer a big thank you to the office of Senator Shannon Grove and Crystal Geyser Alpine Spring Water for a generous donation of 18 pallets of water to the Orange County Fire Authority Foundation. Crystal Geyser and Sen. Grove offered this gracious help to the men and women of OCFA as part of a larger grant to other communities also facing wildfires in the state.

I had a chance to speak to Shannon, my old friend and "seatmate" from our days together in Sacramento, and relayed to her the community's thanks for her dedication to all the people of California.

Containing the Airport Fire and assisting those who have been impacted has been a huge community effort, and the outside help is greatly appreciated.
