In light of the heatwaves and fire-prone areas in the Third District, my office is hosting a Wildfire Preparedness Town Hall, where members of the community can learn useful tips to protect their families and homes during unexpected wildfires. September 2 marks 81 years since the end of the Second World War, a war that fundamentally changed the world and took 60 to 75 million lives over six years of bloody conflict. On that day in 1945, on the deck of the U.S.S. Missouri docked in Tokyo Bay, Japanese Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu, under the watchful eye of General Douglas MacArthur, signed the Instrument of Surrender on behalf of the Japanese Government, formally ending World War II. |

At our August 25 Board meeting, we recognized Baryic Hunter, Assistant Chief of Field Operations for the North Region at the Orange County Fire Authority, for his tireless dedication to the safety of our residents. Chief Hunter has been a vitally important leader in our firefighting community, having served the fire service for 30 years, 18 of those with OCFA. He has served in numerous regional and statewide roles, including the CAL FIRE Type 1 Incident Management Team, the Orange County All-Hazard Incident Management Team, Emergency Operations Center Director of Emergency Services, and president of the Orange County Professional Firefighters Association. Chief Hunter’s educational bonafides are also worth mentioning. Holding an associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degree from Harvard, Stanford, and the IAFC, Chief Hunter wields a rare combination of educational prowess and seasoned field experience. Chief Hunter was an indispensable asset during some of the county’s worst public safety incidents, including the Blude Ridge Fire, Silverado Fire, the Coastal Fire, and the GKN Hazardous Materials Incident, where he served in various leadership roles.
We are all incredibly grateful for the commitment, professionalism, and dedication that Chief Hunter has put into his career and wish him a restful retirement. It is well deserved!

At Tuesday's Board of Supervisors meeting, Chairman Chaffee and I introduced a resolution recognizing August as Eligibility Professionals Month. These professionals from our Social Services Agency and OC Community Resources regularly correspond with those in our community who are in need of health care services, food assistance, employment, housing, Veterans’ services, and more. Their professionalism, patience, and compassion they have for our residents are to be commended, and it is due to them that the safety net that Orange County provides for those in our community that are on the margins is maintained and trusted by so many. I want to thank every one of our eligibility professionals that serve the people of Orange County, who strive to make our county a better place for everyone. |

I am pleased to announce that S. 4505, the US Senate version of HR 3095 that grants North Tustin its own zip code, has passed the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs, and is now set to be brought to the Senate for a floor vote. If approved by the US Senate, it goes to President Trump’s desk for signature to become law. This bill has been a long time coming for North Tustin residents. After being subject for decades to unfair local taxes as a result of a shared zip code with the City of Santa Ana but not being a part of the city, this unfair taxation will finally come to an end. I look forward to the speedy passage of this bill by the full US Senate, and for the President to sign it into law, giving our North Tustin community much needed relief. |

My staff recently attended the Building Industry Association of Southern California’s (BIASC) Housing Attainability Conference, where housing-focused leaders in both the public and private sectors discussed housing strategies in our region. These discussions are crucial as the region attempts to correct housing policy, and address the housing shortage. Bringing creative, market-driven solutions to the table, along with common sense policy, were driving themes during the conference’s dialogue throughout various panels. Thank you to BIASC for hosting this event and bringing together regional leaders that make a difference. |
