On October 9th, we honored Leif Erikson, the Norse explorer who set sail across the Atlantic and became one of the first Europeans to reach North America. His courage, curiosity, and spirit of discovery remind us to always explore beyond the horizon.

On the second Monday in October, we celebrated the daring voyage of Christopher Columbus, whose journey across the Atlantic in 1492 helped shape the course of world history.

Beyond honoring the explorer himself, this day is also a celebration of Italian American heritage, a recognition of the countless contributions they have made to our culture, communities, and nation.

Happy 250th Birthday to the US Navy!

On October 13th, 1775, the Continental Navy was founded, of which John Adams, then Delegate from Massachusetts to the Continental Congress, who would later become the second President of the United States, served as its first Secretary of the Navy, the known as “Chairman of the Marine Committee”.

The US Navy has since become one of the most formidable naval fighting forces in the world, testament to the patriotism, innovation, and bravery of the sailors that made that commitment to the defense of our nation.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this year's Canyon Clean-Up event. As a proud sponsor, I'm thrilled to support this annual community initiative.

Volunteers dedicated their morning to beautifying their Canyon communities.

County staff from OC Waste & Recycling were there and helped coordinate the large dumpsters which were used to collect all the waste material that day.

Among the items collected were green waste, furniture, mattresses, tires, electronic waste, and roadside litter.

CADEN BUNGE & HUDSON MOLINE HERO RECOGNITION

CADEN BUNGE & HUDSON MOLINE HERO RECOGNITION

Early this year, Caden Bunge and Hudson Moline, at the age of 18, saved two people trapped in a burning vehicle in an accident.

Joining Orange County Fire Authority and the City of Mission Viejo, my Community Outreach Director, Saga Conroy, presented a certificate of recognition to these two brave young men on my behalf, and thanked both for their selfless act of bravery and heroism. By risking their own safety, they acted fast and successfully rescued the couple from a vehicle engulfed in flames. They’re the kind of neighbors we all hope to have, and the kind of people we should all aspire to be.

And with the holidays coming up, it’s a good nudge for all of us to just slow down a little, pay attention, and look out for each other. Most accidents happen when we’re rushed or distracted. A little caution goes a long way.

Real heroes don’t always wear capes. Sometimes they’re just 18-year-olds doing what’s right.

Thank you, Caden and Hudson, for being heroes for our community!
