As April comes to a close, I am delighted to see the county's progress in several areas. The Board unanimously supported our Sheriff's Department's contract with Pepperdine University for its youth diversion and counseling services, which has had immense success in diverting young people from criminal behavior. I also participated in the rededication ceremony of the historic Orange Plaza Park Fountain, which was sadly damaged in 2023 by a speeding car. I'm delighted that this staple of the Orange community has been renovated for our residents to enjoy. The Board also greenlit the construction of Crawford Canyon Park, a new 2-acre park located in North Tustin, which is expected to be completed in 2025. April has been incredibly productive, and I look forward to what May will bring! |
On April 9, the Orange County Board of Supervisors approved construction plans for Crawford Canyon Park, with work expected to begin late spring 2024. The 2-acre park, located at the intersection of Newport Avenue and Crawford Canyon Road in North Tustin, will include a quarter-mile walkway, two nature themed play areas for kids, exercise stations, picnic tables, benches, ADA accessible pathways, foot bridges and a drinking fountain. New trees and landscaping will also be planted throughout. The project is expected to be completed in 2025. |
Chairman Don Wagner Orange County Board of Supervisors Approve of Youth Diversion Services Contract with Pepperdine University (Santa Ana, CA) –Chairman Don Wagner and the Orange County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a contract between Pepperdine University and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department for youth diversion and counseling services. These services are designed to divert young people from criminal behavior and substance abuse by providing individual assessment and treatment by certified behavioral health professionals. “I am delighted to see the Sheriff’s Department embrace this program,” said Chairman Wagner. “These youth diversion and counseling services steer some of our at-risk teens away from criminal behavior and into a more wholesome lifestyle. This program has been immensely successful in the past, and I am confident in the results it will bring for our young people.” The program encompasses intake assessments, individual, family, parent, and group counseling, drug and alcohol classes, case management, and client advocacy. With a track record spanning almost 15 years, the program has operated seamlessly under contracts, witnessing no liability issues. During the period from July 1, 2023, to December 1, 2023, Pepperdine has served approximately 443 young people and their families, delivering nearly 3,000 hours of counseling services. These certified professionals will play a crucial role in assisting justice-involved youth to transition away from unhealthy habits that contribute to criminal behavior and instead foster the development of positive behaviors. Chairman Wagner and the Board of Supervisors are proud to support this highly valued service that will greatly assist the Orange County Sheriff's Department in their mission to protect and serve our community. |

I was proud to be a sponsor for the 6th Annual South County Pet Expo at the Lake Forest Sports Park. My District Director, Scott Voigts, and I were joined by Lake Forest Mayor Mark Tettemer. Over 4,000 attended, with 85 booths, and countless animals were adopted to their new forever homes! A big thanks to the City of Lake Forest and all partners who made this pet expo possible! |
REDEDICATION OF ORANGE PLAZA PARK FOUNTAIN |
I had the opportunity to participate in the rededication of the historic Orange Plaza Park Fountain. In 2023, the fountain was damaged by a speeding car, tearing into the park and damaging the fountain, and had to be shut down. I donated $200,000 for installing safety, crash-rated, up-lighting bollards along the pedestrian walkways facing east and west Chapman and north and south Glassell. More lighting was also installed to give additional motorist visibility to the park. I was proud to be a part of this rededication along with Mayor Dan Slater, Mayor Pro Tem Arianna Barrios, Councilmembers Jon Dumitru, Kathy Tavoularis, Ana Gutierrez, and John Gyllenhammer, as well as Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento. I was also pleasantly surprised with a section of tile presented to me by Mayor Slater. Congratulations on this rededication! |
I had the opportunity to attend the Orange City Council meeting and present a proclamation to the parents of Garrit Cole, pitcher for the New York Yankees, for his 2023 inclusion on the OC Register’s 125 Most Influential People list. Garrit graduated from Orange Lutheran High School and was placed into its Athletic Hall of Fame in 2023. In 2022, he was inducted into the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame. All of us are proud of his accomplishments. He is an inspiration for all the young athletes in Orange County. |
RSM CHAMBER OF COMMERECE ROUND TABLE LUNCHEON |

J.WAYNE MILLER WATER TREATMENT PLANT |
I had the honor to present a proclamation to J. Wayne Miller, Ph.D., at the dedication ceremony of the water treatment plant in his name. Dr. Miller, a former member of the Yorba Linda Water District Board of Directors, collaborated with Orange County Water District’s Board of Directors to establish a partnership for funding, constructing, and maintaining the District’s PFAS water treatment plant. This facility is capable of treating up to 25 million gallons of water per day, assuring that the customers of YLWD receive safe and clean water every time they turn on their taps. It is also the largest PFAS water treatment plant in the nation. Congratulations Dr. Miller! This honor is well deserved! |

GRAND OPENING OF HELEN CALOGGERO WOMEN'S FACILITY AT PROVIDENCE ST. JOSEPH HOSPITAL |
I had the opportunity to attend the Grand Opening of the Helen Caloggero Women's and Family Center in Orange. This new center is part of the Providence St. Joseph Hospital campus in west Orange. The sponsor for this center's creation is philanthropist Marsha Moeller of Anaheim Hills. Her generous support was made in order to honor her late mother, Helen Caloggero. This state-of-the-art facility will ease the way for patients in accessing care and offer a more comprehensive approach to women's health. |

TIDDLYWINKS GRAND RE-OPENING |
My Field Representative Al Tello presented a certificate of recognition to Tiddlywinks OC at their grand re-opening. Owner Jeanie Viveros’s philosophy is to give back to the community through philanthropic events and that no one is too old to have fun in a toy store. So all their toys, games, and books are designed to spark imagination and encourage play in all ages. The owner also stated that a “toy store should be an inviting place of magic, wonder, and whimsy,” and Tiddlywinks Toys & Games is just such a store. |
